Happy Moms

I’m sure you heard of that old saying: “If mama’s not happy, nobody’s happy.” Well, mothers have always carried an enormous responsibility. They are often the home managers and the nurturers. They are also the ones who determine the emotional climate in the home.

God has chosen women to be bearers of the human race. To live up to that role, mothers need the continual grace of God to fulfill their calling. If you have been called to be a mother, here are some ways you can help manage yourself while you’re managing your home.

Listen to your mind. Are you consumed by negative thoughts? Are you complaining more and laughing less? You may be running on empty. If necessary, try to steal some quiet time. For some, this may be during the early morning hours when everyone else is asleep. It is true that when you focus on positive thoughts, negative thoughts can not remain. You can begin this process by starting a gratitude journal. If you start your day by writing at least five things that you are thankful for, you may begin to see the negative thoughts vanish.

Listen to your body. Since your body is the thermometer to your emotional health, it is important to eat the right foods. Well balanced and nutritious meals will help keep you energized throughout the day. Meals rich in protein and fiber, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables, help improve brain functioning. They also help the brain’s ability to maintain focus and concentration during the day.
Evening meals consisting of foods rich in carbohydrates will help enhance a good night’s sleep. Sleep is also stimulated by keeping consistent bedtimes and engaging in physical activity. Busy moms may not find this easy, but multiple repetitions of stair climbing may be a way to get some calories burned while the kids are napping. You also may want to try napping with them.

Listen to your heart. As a woman, your emotions can be very complex. It is important that you manage them appropriately. If you find that you are on an emotional roller coaster, rule out the obvious contributing factors. Have you been sleeping well? Is it that time of the month? Maybe you can look at making some minor adjustments. Maybe you want to increase your prayer time. Maybe you want to plan time with friends. Maybe you and your husband can plan a “date” night. Whatever you need to do to help rejuvenate your spirit, do it. It will be worth it to you and your family.

I believe that there is an ample supply of love that God pours into the hearts of all mothers. Let God take of you as you take care of your family. If you have been called to be a mother, He will give you the strength to do it
(Philippians 4:13).
